From the Supervisor Trine Spindler

A wise man once told me that every resident of a township should, at some point, serve in some capacity of their town.

The Town Board is always looking for community members who have the gumption to help guide the progress of our town. No experience is needed—just come to a board meeting and let us know what your passion is. The more engagement we can inspire in the Town of Day, the stronger our community will become.

When I ran for the Town Board, I knew one of our main goals would be to bring the Town of Day into the modern era while also cleaning up the books. I cannot say enough about the dedication of our current board, treasurer, and clerk and their didication to this very consuming task. Hundreds of unpaid hours have been spent on training to understand the new systems we now navigate, reviewing old records, cleaning up files, implementing new technologies, and developing policies that will help secure our town’s identity for the future. We’ve realized that the days of running the town “like the good old boys” are behind us.

  2. It has been announced that Alliant Energy has purcahsed the lesses and contracts from EDP, also known as the Marathon Wind Project covering the Town of Brigton and the Town of Eau Pleine. This has created siginificant changes to the Hub City Wind project. The project now covers 6 townships; Brighton, Eau Pleine, Cleveland, Green Valley, McMilian and Day. Also the project size is now 150MW with a projecting of 33 turbines.

  3. Alliant was denied by Wood County to enter into a lease or purchase the UW Reseach Farm located in the town of Mcmilian.

  4. After Alliant purchased the Marathon Wind they dropped the lawsuit against the town of Brignton and the town of Eau Pleine.

Currently Town of Day has active ordinances for: wind and solar which can all be found on our website.

TOWNSHIP PAY STRUCTURE

The Town Board has identified the need to update the Town of Day’s pay structure. With recent changes in the operations of the township, it is important to establish a fair and sustainable compensation plan which will make the positions attractive for residents to get involved. With the new challenges the township faces and the higher risk now faced by board members, the current pay rate is not sustainable. If the town gets to a point where no board members can be found to fill positions the result is that the town gets annexed. The time of the ‘good old club’ running the township is no longer viable. The current town board is covering so much work that board meetings are now twice a month because there are too many issue to clean up. This of course does not count for all the preparation, grant writing, continuing education, cleaning up decades of papers, and preparing materials so that when a new member of the baord is elected they will receive a guide so that they do not start from nothing. These are just some of this issues the board is handling. This does not even get close to what the Clerk, Treasure and Chair has had to deal with; installing QuickBooks and dealing with year old tax issues.

A Town Board’s compensation is determined by residents at either a specially called Town Meeting or the Annual Meeting. At these meetings, proposed rates are discussed, debated, and voted on. Any approved changes do not take effect until the next election cycle.

The pay rate for the Town Board has not been change for a very long time. Currently, all five members of the Town Board receive a flat rate of $60 per meeting and $0.50 per mile for travel. It does not matter if the meeting is 15 min or 12 hours. In some cases, this amount does not even offset the loss of wages incurred while performing official duties.

The Town Board is committed to providing effective governance but with the major changes happening in Town of Day it is important that the compensation reflects the responsibilities and risk of the board, the time requirement including preparation and continuing education which is a vital part of staying in legal compliance.

On April 16, 2026 the Town of Day is hosting the Annual Meeting where this issue and others will be discussed and voted on. I will do my best to provide education on wha other pay structure are being used by township in our area.

Thanks you for your time. Trine Spindler, SUPERVISOR
